Located just 90 minutes from Perth is a tourist hub that is emerging as one of Perth’s premier day-trip hotspots. Gaining in popularity, this Avon Valley gem is steeped in history, shopping, charm and adventure, which is making Northam the go-to destination for day-trippers and thrill seekers alike. Find out why we love Northam, and why it is becoming Perth’s favourite day out.

ADVENTURE

Start your day the right way with a scenic view of the valley from 2000 feet in the air! Northam is the ballooning capital of WA and Windward Ballooning Adventures guarantees a sunrise to remember! Float and glide above the clouds while seeing the sights of Northam from a truly unique perspective. The one hour balloon ride is concluded with a champagne breakfast and a certificate to acknowledge your bragging rights as a certified ‘balloonatic’.

CULTURE

Explore Northam’s rich cultural history at the newly opened Bilya Koort Boodja centre. This purpose built facility offers an interactive cultural experience that celebrates and recognises the rich culture of the Nyoongar Ballardong People. Wander through a variety of artefacts, experience the most mesmerising Welcome to Country, learn about local Indigenous history and explore how the local land and waterways were used in a series of engaging workshops.

ART

FORM’s Public Silo Trail has put regional areas of WA on the map, and the closest (and first) of these magnificent murals is in Northam! Two renowned artists, PHLEGM and HENSE have each reinvigorated two huge silos each. These artworks are not to be missed when heading to Northam.

HISTORY

Did you know that Northam is only second to Fremantle in terms of historically significant buildings? Yep, neither did we! Jump on the bus tour to learn more about the rich history of the shire. Northam is steeped in history and a number of places are a must visit if you’re heading to the region:

  • Morby Cottage – Northam’s first house, home of pioneer John Morrell
  • Old Northam Railway Station – walk through history in this unique museum
  • Old Northam Post Office – Built in 1873, it was later used as an important hub during World War 2

GLAMOUR

This grand heritage estate is a popular wedding venue, and is also available for retreats or overnight stays. This stately Victorian Georgian Manor home was established in 1839 and has a colourful history as a social centre for the Avon Valley. There are a number of accommodation options for Buckland Estate, including two self contained historical cottages and space for camping / glamping.

WINE

It’s not just the Swan Valley and Margaret River Region that produce quality wines. There’s also a couple of favourites in the picturesque Avon Valley! Avonbrook Wines is a boutique winery in the Avon Valley, just outside of Northam, where you can enjoy gourmet cheeseboards with a glass of wine. Similarly distanced from Northam is Coorinja Winery who feature a preservative free Shiraz, and have been established since 1870! For those who don’t want to venture outside of Northam, Laura’s Wine Bar is the most fabulous bookshop cross wine bar we ever did see, and you will be welcomed with open arms at this stunning little pit stop.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

We discovered a huge range of places to dine – whether casual or fancy, Northam offers it all. Lume offers diners a range of meal types, including a delicious tapas / share plate menu that celebrates cuisines from around the world. Duke’s Inn has the most stunning outdoor courtyard and a pub menu that will please all palates.

PHOTOGRAPHY

If you haven’t witnessed the canola fields in Spring then you’re in for a treat. Northam and the Avon Valley is a patchwork quilt of yellow and green during the months of August, September and October, and Instagrammers have been flocking to Northam to capture stunning photographs of sunset over the golden fields. There’s also the famous Avon River that provides ample opportunities for budding photographers to snap a picture or two.

ACCOMMODATION

Sometimes a day just isn’t enough, and there are plenty of accommodation options available. From Glamping (provided by Soul Camping for our stay) to heritage listed hotels, there’s a huge range to close from for all budgets. Head to the Shire’s website for links and recommendations.
